One-to-One Yoga Therapy in Biggar, South Lanarkshire & Online

Yoga Therapy

When a yoga class isn’t enough, yoga therapy gives you a personal roadmap.

One-to-one sessions combine yoga therapy, Ayurveda, and hands-on clinical experience to relieve pain, restore movement, and support women’s health. Whether you’re recovering from injury, struggling with hip/back pain, or navigating fertility, postpartum, or perimenopause — you don’t need to figure it out alone.

What is Yoga Therapy?

This isn’t yoga as performance. This is yoga as medicine.

Most yoga classes are built for the already-bendy, the already-strong, the already-confident.
Yoga Therapy is designed for the rest of us — the inflexible, the tired, the injured, the women whose bodies don’t feel like they used to.

Yoga therapy is different from a regular class. It begins with you — your body, your story, your needs. Together, we’ll create a practice that adapts as you do.

  • For pain relief: hip, back, joint pain, arthritis, or recovery from surgery.

  • For women’s health: fertility, postpartum recovery, perimenopause, and menopause.

  • For stress & fatigue: anxiety, burnout, poor sleep, or nervous system overload.

In every session you’ll be guided step by step with movement, breathwork, Ayurvedic tools, and therapeutic techniques like acupressure and myofascial release. You’ll leave not just feeling better, but with a personalised plan you can use at home — so progress continues between sessions.

Movement is medicine — and in yoga therapy, it’s designed for you.

Why Choose Yoga Therapy with Jo?

I’m Joann Buchan, an Ayurveda Practitioner and Yoga Therapist with nearly 10 years of 1:1 clinical experience. My expertise is in:

  • Hip & lower back pain (including hip impingement, disc herniation, and post-surgery recovery)

  • Women’s health (fertility, perimenopause, menopause, postpartum)

  • Digestion, stress, and fatigue (because the gut, nervous system, and joints are always linked)

“I know hip pain from the inside. After my own hip surgery, yoga therapy was central to my recovery — not just the physical rehab, but the whole picture: how I moved, how I rested, what I ate, how I managed stress. That experience is in every session I offer. I’m not teaching from a textbook.”

Hey, I’m Joann Buchan

You can call me Jo. Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist, Ayurveda Practitioner, and co-founder of Strength & Soul. With over 20 years of teaching experience, I support people who want more than a generic class — those who need personalised guidance to move out of pain, restore energy, and feel stronger in everyday life.

Over the years, I’ve developed our Hip & Lower Back program and Membership which offers a therapeutic approach that blends yoga, Ayurveda, anatomy, and physiology to help you rebuild from the ground up. My work has always been inspired by my clients — from people recovering from hip and back injuries, to women navigating perimenopause, fertility, or postpartum.

My superpower is helping you see what others might have missed — whether that’s uncovering hidden patterns in how you move, understanding the deeper link between digestion and pain, or giving you tools to feel calmer and more in control. You already hold the answers within you; my role is to help you access them.

Yoga therapy isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about finding the right tools for your unique body and creating a path that truly supports your health

YOGA THERAPY

Yoga therapy is a personalised, clinical approach to yoga. Instead of following a general class, I create practices tailored to your body, health concerns, and goals. A regular yoga class might focus on fitness or flexibility, but yoga therapy helps with specific issues like hip pain, back injuries, stress, sleep problems, digestion, or women’s health transitions such as perimenopause and menopause.

Each session begins with a short consultation where we talk about your health, lifestyle, and current symptoms. From there, I’ll guide you through personalised movement, breathwork, relaxation, and simple Ayurvedic tools. You’ll leave with a practical programme you can use at home. My goal is to give you tools you can apply immediately — not just during the session.

A typical yoga therapy session lasts 60 minutes. Some clients benefit from just a few sessions to get a clear plan, while others continue regularly for deeper support. Many people book a block of 3–6 sessions to see the best results.

I specialise in hip and lower back pain, women’s health (fertility, postpartum recovery, perimenopause, menopause), stress, anxiety, and digestive issues. I also support clients recovering from surgery (such as hip impingement or disc herniation), burnout, or chronic pain conditions.

No. Most of my clients haven’t done yoga before, or haven’t done it in years. Yoga therapy doesn’t assume any prior experience — it starts exactly where you are. If you’re stiff, recovering from injury, or have never been near a yoga mat, that’s completely fine. We build from the ground up at your pace.

Both. In-person sessions are available at Strength & Soul in Elsrickle, near Biggar, South Lanarkshire. Online sessions run via Zoom and work just as well — many clients from Dumfries, Lanark, Peebles and further afield choose online for the convenience. You’ll need a quiet space, a yoga mat, and a laptop, tablet, or phone with a camera.

Physiotherapy typically focuses on diagnosing and treating a specific injury or structural problem. Yoga therapy looks at the whole picture — how you move, how you breathe, how stress is held in the body, what your sleep and digestion are doing, and how all of these connect. It draws on Ayurveda as well as movement, which means we often find and address things that purely physical assessment misses. The two approaches complement each other well and I’m happy to work alongside your existing physio or medical treatment.

Yes. Yoga therapy works well alongside physiotherapy, chiropractic care, or conventional medical treatment. It is not a replacement for medical advice, but it can support recovery, reduce pain, improve mobility, regulate stress, and enhance overall wellbeing. I’m happy to liaise with your healthcare providers if needed.
