What is Kinetic Chain Release? Does it work? And why do we check for a leg length difference at the start of your treatment? Kinetic Chain release used as a treatment for pain?
What is Kinetic chain Release?
Kinetic Chain Release “KCR” was developed by Physiotherapist Hugh Gilbert to bring the body back into alignment and an effective treatment for pain, alleviating so many musculoskeletal issues such as tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), fibromyalgia, bone fractures, scoliosis, tennis/golfer’s elbow, weak (frequently sprained) ankles, plantar fasciitis, sprains, strains and tears. As well as chronic back pain, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine headaches, teeth clenching/grinding, snoring/sleep apnea, bloating, knee problems, breathing difficulty, neck pain, stress, menstrual pain, tension in the shoulders, recurrent hamstring issues, recurrent groin strains, tight calves, insomnia, wrist pain and weakness.
Kinetic Chain Release is how we started our journey in 2013; We use it as a basis in almost all of our appointments with our clients. We find it to be not only an excellent assessment tool but hugely effective at bringing the body back into balance/alignment and alleviating pain.
Through Kinetic Chain Release, we aim to bring your body back into alignment/ balance and correct a leg length difference.
After we check your leg length, We start working at your ankles and work on the whole body through a series of mobilisations and stretches. I often describe it as a service or MOT for your body. Like a service for your car, it is advised that you get a treatment before your body “breaks down”
With regards to activity after your treatment, make a judgement on how you feel. Some clients feel really energised and some feel really tired. We encourage you to do what your body needs. You might not feel like your usual, run or gym session and may want to do something gentle such as restorative yoga, go for a nice walk or give it a miss and rest.
What does a leg length difference mean?
When you come to us for a treatment, we usually start with Kinetic Chain Release and at the beginning of KCR treatment, we check for a leg length difference which is exactly what it says, a difference in the length of your legs.. This is important because it instantly allows us to see if your body is in alignment.
Body alignment refers to how your body lines up from the head down to the ankles. If your body is in alignment it is balanced, there is a decrease in the risk of injury, and it works more efficiently. There can be many reasons we may be out of alignment, including poor posture or an injury or maybe just daily life. Dependent on your job, whether you spend a lot of time driving, at a desk, on your feet and how you sleep can affect this.
A leg length difference can result in each part of your body being out of balance or alignment. If your legs are different lengths, it can affect your ankles, knees, hips, back, shoulders all the way up to your Jaw.
Does KCR work as a treatment for pain?
We both love KCR so much because it personally helped both of us.
Jo tried various treatments before she had hip surgery and found that the only thing that gave her any relief was KCR. She was so impressed she booked me an appointment and forced me to go, yes, I did say she forced, me to get this thing called Kinetic Chain Release for a shoulder injury that was taking too long to heal. I was told it would be another six weeks of recovery, and feeling frustrated and desperate to get back on the pitch, I reluctantly went! I played rugby that Saturday, and I didn’t force myself through pain as I had in the past. I genuinely had no problems, I tested it at training, and I was good to play. This was the only convincing it took for me to know that KCR works. Shortly after, I was on the level 1 course to help Jo through the hip pain before and after surgery.
After the first day of the course, I came home excited to show Jo what I had learned. The protocol made sense to me. I had lots of experience with my injuries and coaching for all of this to make sense.
However, I didn’t understand why on earth they had to play plinky plinky music in the background! At that time, I had no intention of taking my learning with KCR any further, but things grew organically.
After KCR level 1, I helped Jo as was planned. I helped family and friends and had to go and get myself some insurance to work with other people. I then went on to further my learning with other courses, including KCR 2, 3, CTR 1 and 2 and the Masterclass in Hawaii, functional cupping, Ayurvedic massage and mama points. I can honestly say that I love KCR, feel the massive benefits myself and see the benefits in clients every day. I also quite like a bit of plinky plinky music now.
